 Q1.What do you understand by risk? Explain the various methods of risk management.

Meaning of Risk

Risk is the first and most important element of business, without risk no business can be imagined.

In simple words, risk means the possibility of loss.

any work in which there is a possibility of loss is called a risky work.

Classification of Risk

Risk can be classified into the following two parts:

1. Speculative Risk

2. Pure Risk

1. Speculative Risk :- Speculative risk refers to those risks where there is a possibility of both profit and loss.

For example, if a person starts trading in the stock market by investing ₹10,000, then in that situation, there is a possibility of both profit and loss. This is because if the market rises. Then in that situation, there will be profit and if the market falls. In that situation, there will be loss.

The risk of profit and loss in market is speculative risk

2.Pure Risk:- Pure risk refers to those risks where is only and only a possibility of loss.

Methods or Techniques for Risk Management

The main methods for risk management are as follows:

1.Risk Avoidance: This is the first and most important method of risk management, under which one stays away from risk. Because no risk means no loss.

2.Risk Prevention:- This is the second and most important method of risk management, under which various measures are taken to prevent risk rather than staying away from it.

For example: Using strong locks to prevent theft.

3.Risk Acceptance: This is the third and most important method of risk management, under which the loss incurred due to risk is borne.

For example: Bearing the loss of bad debts by creating PFBD (Provision for Bad Debts).

4. Transfer of Risk: This is the fourth most important method of risk management, under which risk is transferred.

Note:- in stock market we can transfer the risk through hedging.

5. Insurance of risk: This is the fifth and most important method of risk management, under which insurance is taken to avoid risk.

Conclusion: risk is an important part of business. By using different methods of risk management such as avoidance, prevention, acceptance, transfer, and insurance, a business can minimize losses and ensure stability.
